Cast iron radiators do take a bit longer to heat up however, once they’re warm, they stay heated for longer, so there is a trade-off. What are traditional radiators?
Traditional radiators are a classic radiator style typically associated with period properties, such as old houses, churches and public buildings. These are predominantly made from cast iron, although modern versions of traditional-style radiators are also available in steel and aluminium.
Simpler, plain styles of radiator were a key feature of the Victorian era. More grandiose properties, however, might find Rococo radiator styles, with the ornate patterns on each section more in keeping.
Due to their weight, traditional cast iron radiators are usually installed on integral legs to help support them.
Are traditional radiators energy efficient?
Traditional radiators may be more energy efficient than you think. Many traditional or vintage-style radiators are made of cast iron, which has a higher thermal mass (weight/density) than other materials, such as steel and aluminium.
This means that more energy needs to be used for these traditional radiators to heat up. However, once hot, cast iron is renowned for its controlled release of heat over a longer period of time than other materials.
Therefore, while you might have to have your central heating system come on earlier so rooms are warm when you get up, you will find that you are turning off your heating earlier in the day to benefit from that stored heat.
Do traditional radiators work with modern heating systems?
Our traditional radiators are made to current standards so there should be no issues using them on a modern heating system. All the connections will be compatible with modern pipe work and valves, with no specialist items or installation needed.
It should be noted that many vintage-style radiators are made of cast iron, which can take longer to heat than conventional steel panel radiators. With this in mind, it will be important to work out how long the heat system needs to be on to make sure the desired heat is in the rooms at the correct time. It is quite likely the heating will need to come on slightly earlier, but you will be able to turn the heating off earlier as a result.
Do traditional radiators take longer to heat up?
Many traditional radiators are made of cast iron, which does take slightly longer to heat up than conventional steel radiators. However, once hot, a traditional cast iron radiator will hold its heat longer, emitting it over an extended period of time.
This means you might need to turn on the central heating a little earlier in the day, but you will also be turning the heating off a lot sooner and benefiting from that retained heat for longer.
Can I replace my existing radiators with traditional radiators?
Our traditional radiators are compatible with modern heating systems, so there should be no problem replacing an existing radiator with a more vintage radiator style. However, there are a few points to consider.
Firstly, you will still benefit from the same (or potentially even more) levels of heat. This means that calculating the heat output of your new radiator based on the room size and other factors is advised. Secondly, sizes may also differ slightly as not all traditional radiators come in exact lengths of 1m, 1.5m, and so on. Look for the closest equivalent size and, if need be, ask a professional whether it is possible to move the pipes slightly to accommodate it.
Which rooms are traditional radiators suitable for?
Any room can look great with a classic, vintage-style radiator. Hallways in a period style are a popular option as the radiator is often the first thing you see when you enter the property.
