We talk to Emma Kosh at Emma Kosh Interiors about the inspiration behind her recent project to style a luxury Family Bathroom Project & Luxury Ensuite.

Project Background

Can you tell us a bit about the project and what the brief was from your client?

‘The project was in a listed Georgian house, they had modernised the bathrooms when they first moved but the style didn’t suit the grandeur of the house and the plumbing that had been DIY’ed by a previous owner had been causing problems.

The brief was to completely overhaul a shower room, family bathroom and ensuite off the main bedroom. We had to strip out absolutely everything and start from scratch. The plan was to create spaces that would suit the luxury of the rest of the house and meet the needs of a growing family.’

What was your overall design vision for the space, and how did heating play a role in that vision?

‘We were going for heritage luxury with all the modern features such as smart lighting. We were bringing an old property up to date.

We chose a base tile in a neutral tone and used this across the three spaces for cohesion but created a unique feel in each room with the other features such as colour and accent tiles. We used the similar brushed gold fixtures and fluted vanity units throughout.

We needed to find a heating system that we could use to tie in with the scheme across the three spaces. The idea was that you would walk into each bathroom space and see how they are aesthetically linked- yet all have their own unique feel.

Radiator Selection

What made you choose The Radiator Centre for this project?

‘I have driven past The Radiator Centre hundreds of times and seen the incredible range of colours in the window. I have been waiting for a project where we could explore what is possible by adding interesting radiators. How they can enhance the aesthetic scheme rather than being purely functional.’

Which radiators did you use and why?

‘We chose the finish first to match the scheme – a sandy textured beige colour with a slight glimmer. Then we were advised which towel rails were available in that finish which led us to our decision. We settled on Lucy towel rails, from Cordivari, and Italian manufacturer, which came in a range of sizes so that it could be used in multiple spaces.’

How did you balance form and function when choosing the right radiators for each room?

‘We had to ensure the towel rails were scaled for the rooms as they were the only heating source, the size and the position took a little working out. We wanted them to be a feature but still do the hard work of heating the room and warming the towels.’

Design Process & Integration

How did you approach integrating radiators into the overall aesthetic of the interior?

‘Traditionally radiators are an ignored functional item, but we love how you can use them to make a room feel more architectural or beautiful. We wanted them to look like a considered part of the scheme, very purposeful in choice of colour, form, and placement. The sandy texture toned perfectly with the wood of the vanity and the matt of the tiles. They all sat together beautifully, and it looked like we had considered the importance of those fine details.’

Were there any design challenges when it came to placing or styling the radiators? How did you solve them?

‘The only challenge was finding valves that would do what we required and would match with the colour we had chosen – valves are not as exciting as the colours of the radiators we chose!’

Working with The Radiator Centre

How did you find working with The Radiator Centre team? Did the service or expertise help shape any design decisions?

‘It was so easy working with the team, clear options, great communication and timely delivery. We went into store and dealt with the team on email and the phone. Everyone knew the plan even if one person was away they had communicated it to other team members – which is rare.’

Were your clients involved in choosing the radiators? What was their reaction to the final result?

‘No, they didn’t choose but did have sign off on the colour and finish – having three bathrooms transformed in one go is a massive undertaking but they were absolutely thrilled with how it all came together. They each have choice of a luxury sanctuary, and these will meet their needs and the style of the house for decades.’

Reflections & Advice

Looking back, what do you think the radiators brought to the space—both in terms of performance and design?

‘They were one of the elements that took this design to the next level, we are all about the fine details and these were one more thing we could have fun with tying into the overall scheme.

If I was giving advice to other interior designers or home owners, I would say ‘Be brave, don’t ignore radiators, make them an interesting part of the scheme, there are so many to choose from so why go for basic white?’.’

About you

‘I want to give the client their dream home, I specialise in getting to know the clients on a deep level so that I can create the perfect space for them that reflects their unique personality. I love working alongside people to make a home for them that wouldn’t have been possible alone. I take inspiration from everything, a family heirloom, a scrap of fabric, a piece of art – anything can spark my imagination towards a scheme – that’s what keeps it all fresh and interesting.’
